D&D APPAREL DESIGN

This shirt design was commissioned by a college friend of mine for a D&D campaign he was running. Referencing sketches that he and his campaign members provided, I created a full color design that was later printed onto shirts and sweatshirts.

Here are some samples illustrating the creative process that led to the final printed shirt design.

Concept Sketches

Below are the original concept sketches provided to me by my friend. There were two directions the design could go: a warmer palette for an emblem titled the "Autumnguard" (left) or a cooler palette for an emblem of a mountain town in their campaign (right).

Since the mountain town emblem was originally designed by the members of the campaign, the personal connection helped it win favor the with group and this was the design we moved forward with.

Revised Sketches

With the direction of the project decided, I then provided my own set of sketches to determine how best to compose the elements of the design.

In addition to the mountains, my friend also wanted to include some trees similar to pines and flowers similar to lily of the valley.

Final Sketch

After some discussion on how we would incorporate all of the design elements without making the space feel too cramped or losing any of the smaller details like the flowers, we settled on the design shown below.

I also took this opportunity to establish the value scale of the design.

First Color Pass

With the composition of the design approved, the next step was to move into Adobe Illustrator. Here, I created a vector version of the design with several different color schemes to choose from.

The original concept for this design was "a mountain with a sunrise to symbolize rebirth and new beginnings," so I really wanted to put emphasis on the rising sun element.

I also provided a few variations to the mountain design.

Final Design

Below is the final design chosen by my friend and his campaign members.

He was also kind enough to send me my own shirt with the design printed on it! To this day it is still one of my favorite articles of clothing that I own.
