D&D TATTOO DESIGN

This tattoo design was commissioned by a college friend of mine. To commemorate the long-running D&D campaign he and his friends were a part of, they decided to get matching tattoos of the logo they designed for their campaign.

Using the original black and white file provided to me, I created several full-color rendered versions for them.

The Original Design

Below is the original file provided to me. After cleaning up the design in Photoshop and Illustrator, I moved onto creating full-color samples.

First Color Pass

Using references my friend sent to me for inspiration, I created three full-color versions of the design. The first remained truest to the original silhouette, and then I took a few liberties with the second and third options.

He really liked the idea of incorporating a watercolor quality to the tattoo, so I filled in the negative space of the shield to spotlight that texture.

Second Color Pass

The first batch of color options were reviewed by my friend and, after choosing the third option as his favorite, we moved into the refinement stage.

To give the tattoo a bit more visual interest and delineate between the different design components, we decided to apply a more metallic look on the swords and shield.

The Final Design

While the fourth version was the chosen winner, the final tattoo design was ultimately simplified by the artist. Regardless, my friend was happy with the design process we went through together as well as the tattoo he and his friends received.
